What do you do with your pet’s belongings after they pass away?

When coming to terms after pet loss, there’s one question many pet owners will ask themselves; What do you do with their pet’s belongings? There’s no right or wrong way to handle the grieving process. Some people will choose to keep their pet’s favourite toys as keepsakes; others may find comfort in donating everything and opting for a fresh start. Whilst some feel it best to repurpose the items and keep them until they have another pet in their life.

Create a fitting tribute

It’s always nice to keep one or two things that belonged to your pet. Maybe his lead and collar, or possibly her favourite toy. But if you don’t want to just stick them at the back of a draw what can you do with the items?

A quick search on Pinterest and you may find inspiration for a crafts project. Your pet’s collar and a portrait make a poignant pet memorial.

Make a donation

Shelters are often run on a shoe string and would be grateful for donations of pet food and pet toys. It is always worth checking before you decide to take items to your local shelter to double check whether the items you are gifting are needed. E.g. Battersea Dogs’ and Cats’ home don’t accept food items as they feed their resident animals with a premium food and changing diet can cause upset stomachs.

If you are planning to open your heart and home to another pet, then keeping old toys and bedding is an environmentally friendly way to repurpose your pet’s old items. You may also enjoy seeing the old dog bed being reused.

Whether you choose to create a tribute, make a donation or repurpose your departed pet’s belongings only you can decide on the most appropriate option. Share any ideas or suggestions in the comments section.
